Moving to new grass

We have had just over 2" of rain since the beginning of June. For our farm that is very dry.

On a pasture-based farm like ours, rain is very important. Without rain, our pastures do not grow.

Above you can see our cattle grazing in a field where we cut hay in June. The grass is still green, but it stopped growing weeks ago.

This technique is called "stockpiling" where we let grass grow and come back to graze it when the cows need more. We usually stockpile grass in the fall to extend grazing into November and December. With the dry weather we are grateful to have pastures to graze.

Soft Pig Snuffling

Racey and I woke to a relatively unfamiliar sound in the middle of the night this weekend: the sound of heavy rain. We got up and closed a few windows as occasional gusts of wind dampened our window sills.

Remember that Album?

Last year in May I mentioned in this newsletter than we recorded an album. Many of you have asked about it over the ensuing months, and we are proud to announce that we finally have a final product to share!
