What does Independence Day mean to you?

Good morning, and happy Fourth of July.
I love the cadence of national holidays for their capacity to remind me of all the different ways we can approach a topic. In our nation's independence, and in the celebration of that holiday, there is history, both past and present.
This year I'm reminded of something I learned when I lived for many years in Spain: the mixed feelings some of my friends had around national celebrations in Spain, and the display of the national flag, which for many conjures up the memory of the dictatorship of Franco and his nationalist pride.
This was a foreign concept to me at that time in my life, since the American flag represented not much more than a fun symbol and toy, often displayed alongside firecrackers, fireworks, hot dogs, and the carefree summer feeling of being a kid.
I've noticed more political undertones this July 4th, from varying perspectives. At the same time, I also see how this summer holiday has the capacity to continue bringing us together, to bring people of different perspectives and different beliefs together around a table of food.

That is my wish, that our food and our farm can bring people together, and perhaps help us find a new perspective as we learn the stories of the person sitting across the table from us.
I played music with my band this Friday at Marcy Field in Keene Valley, NY, to celebrate and watch the fireworks. There were so many people gathered there, sharing food, the heat of the day, and the beauty of the mountains around us.
Happy Fourth of July to you and your family.
