Dinner on the farm & weaning piglets

Terron and I weaned another round of piglets this week. Weaning is the process of separating piglet from mama. This may sound like a hear wrenching process, and it can be. However we wait until the piglets are much older than a conventional piglet operation. Allowing piglets to be with their mamas for 8-10 weeks.

By the time we let the curious piglets walk on to our hog cart, the mamas hardly seem concerned. The day of weaning is full of new and interesting places for the piglets to explore, and the mamas spend most of their first day without piglets napping in the shade.

Our first Farm Food Friday was awesome. Racey and I were watching the forecast closely, and we had rain and wind during the day on Friday and just when we setup the sound equipment for the band the sun came out.

We are so proud to host our community on the farm and share food and music together.

Thank you to everyone who came out. Thank you to my fellow band members: Chad, Jay, Nick B and Nicky G. You guys make my music go round.

Thank you to Racey, Sheneka and Terrian for a delicious dinner and all the work and prep that goes into that.

Thank you Lovett and Layton for stealing the show with you ending song. If you didn't hear it you'll have to come back for the next one:)

Weaning and Pollinators

On the farm this week, we all felt the pressure of heat as a heat wave swept across the country, and we saw unusual temperatures in the high 90s during the day. Chickens were hot, pigs needed a bath, and the humans were somewhere in between. Gratefully, nighttime temperatures still dropped back down into the 70s, so it was okay sleeping weather.

What does Independence Day mean to you?

I love the cadence of national holidays for their capacity to remind me of all the different ways we can approach a topic. In our nation's independence, and in the celebration of that holiday, there is history, both past and present.
